Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time - Mark Haddon

My book cover design is based upon the key theme of the 'Disorder of Life'. Within the narrative Christopher a 15 year old boy who suffers from Aspergers (unsaid within the novel) has to follow his life to a strict plan everyday without order he shuts down. One of Christopher's biggest passion is for prime numbers, I found this particularly interesting as prime numbers are random and have no order to them.

Because of this the design has been created to appeal to Christopher's obsession with order and love of prime numbers, The whole book cover is made of a Prime number grid (17 across by 29 down) and every box follows dimensions and placement based on prime numbers. The front cover itself is a number grid following left to right from the top corner. Each prime number within the grid is replaced with a symbol from the narrative, and these symbols also follow the order of the narrative. Whilst the alternating triangles represent even and odd numbers. And the back of the cover features the same narrative symbols but told backwards.

The covers aesthetics are also inspired by the narrative, red is Christopher's favourite colour and the single yellow car featured on the front, spine and back are a break in the pattern to represent how the yellow cars signify a bad day for Christopher.

Please note, this cover was not a commissioned piece by Random House and I do not own the rights to any of the logos featured
